Received Form 1098 and not sure what Box 2 means?

If you had a mortgage with more than one lender during the year, such as through a refinance, you may receive multiple Forms 1098, with each lender reporting the mortgage interest received while the loan was with that lender.

Form 1098, Mortgage Interest Statement, is an annual mortgage interest statement issued for federal tax reporting purposes. It provides loan information required by the IRS, and a copy is also filed with the IRS. Box 2 shows the outstanding principal balance of your loan with Logix as of January 1 of the prior year. If your loan with Logix started after January 1, Box 2 typically shows the principal balance as of the date your loan began. This is not the interest you paid and it is not your current loan balance. Because the form reports information for the prior calendar year, it is sent to you the following year to share with your tax professional or to use when preparing your tax return.
