An IRA is an Individual Retirement Account. It is a personal Savings and/or Certificate Account that allows you to set aside money for retirement with tax advantages.
There are two primary types of IRA: Traditional and Roth. Depending on which one you choose, you may be able to take advantage of tax-deferred earnings and deduct some or all of your contributions or take advantage of tax-free distributions.
Traditional IRA: Your contributions are tax-deductible if you’re eligible. Your earnings grow tax-deferred, so you will not pay income taxes on your investment earnings until you make withdrawals. Both deductible contributions and earnings are then taxed at your regular income tax rate when the money is withdrawn.
Traditional IRAs also require a minimum amount to be distributed from your IRA each year once you reach a certain age, called the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) age.
Roth IRA: Your contributions are made with after-tax dollars, so they are not tax-deductible and can always be withdrawn tax-free. Unlike Traditional IRAs, your earnings grow tax-free, not just tax deferred. If you meet IRS rules for a qualified distribution your earnings can also be withdrawn tax-free.
Roth IRAs do not require Required Minimum Distribution (RMDs) during your lifetime.
